Aerial Hammock

What is an aerial hammock?

The aerial apparatus that most people are familiar with is aerial silks (though not for long!), which are two long pieces of fabric rigged to the ceiling.  With an aerial hammock, those two pieces are joined at the bottom to form a loop, which offers support and can allow for a pause between moves.  The hammock is very versatile and can be used to increase flexibility, build strength, provide relaxation, and create the opportunity to take it up a notch and pursue tricks, flips, and wraps.

Do I have to be an athlete?

A huge misconception is that you need to be a gymnast, or a dancer, or an athlete, or someone who is at the gym 5 days a week to participate in aerial arts.  Our lower ceiling heights, various class offerings, and our fabric with a loop offers students of all ages and fitness levels the opportunity to reach their fitness goals in a unique, fun way.

What do I wear?

At the minimum, leggings and a tank top should be worn.  Bring a t-shirt for moves that may lead to fabric burn or pinching of the skin.  For safety, grippy socks or bare feet are recommended.  Hair that is shoulder length or longer should be worn up and away from the face.  Please avoid lotions, hair gels, and perfumes prior to class.  All jewelry should be removed.

What classes are offered?
Test-outs offered to move to a higher level class.

Introduction
Intro is offered for hip height hammock.  Learn the foundational wraps/poses while focusing on safety and comfort.  Two or three intro classes are recommended prior to attending any other hammock class.

Level 1 Hip Height
Pre-Requisite: Instructor approval that the Intro to Hammock class series has been successfully
completed.

  • Intro foundational skills are used as building blocks to pose variations.
  • Transitions are introduced which allow poses to be joined together into flows.
  • Introduction to beginner climbs.
  • Conditioning for increased strength, stability, and flexibility.

Eligible for Level 2: Test-out of skills and instructor approval.

Level 2 Hip Height
Pre-Requisite: Complete Level 1 as determined by the instructor.

  • Master foundational movements

  • Perform Level 2 poses with control and minimal “tagging”

  • Progress to longer inversions

  • Increase focus on acrobatics and climbing

  • Introduce holding body weight with flex arm & long arm hangs

  • Improve body mechanic techniques

  • Move in multiple planes (side-to-side, front to back, rotational)

Eligible for Level 3: Test-out and instructor approval.

Level 3 Hip Height
Pre-Requisite: Complete Level 2 as determined by the instructor.

  • Less points of contact with the fabric
  • Unsupported flips/poses
  • Longer flows
  • Slides/Drops
  • Move through poses using tension and slack
  • Advanced pose variations
  • Less ground time
  • Body weight held with flex arm/long arm hangs

Double Hammock
Double the fun!  One person, two hammocks. Prerequisite: Completed Level 1 as determined by instructor.

Aerial Stretch & Stability
Pre-Requisite: Intro series required for Stretch and Stability. No intro classes required for Gentle Stretch and Stability.
Use the support of the hammock to increase: flexibility, range of motion, movement control, and blood flow to your muscles.

Aerial Strong
Strength and conditioning will help take your aerial skills to the next level, by not only building strength, but also by improving flexibility, balance, and endurance inside and outside of the hammock.  This boot camp style class is guaranteed to get your heart rate up with short bursts of cardio; increase your strength for improved stability to joints and quality of movement, all while incorporating dynamic and deep stretching to improve overall mobility and reduce risk for injury.

Classes for children
Children are welcome to begin in the Introduction classes, or may start directly with the Tweener class program designed for those ages 7 to 12. Advanced Tweener classes are by instructor invitation only.
Limitations

Hammocks accommodate up to 275 pounds for Aerial Stretch & Stability and Intro to Hip Height Hammock.  250 pound limitation for all other hammock classes. Refer to waiver for additional information.

Bungee Fitness

What is bungee fitness?

Cardio, full body workout performed while wearing a harness and being attached to bungee cords that are suspended from the ceiling.  The cords allow for a low impact workout while performing exercises that are typically higher impact.  And the best part – you can “fly”!

What do I wear?

At the minimum, leggings and a tank top should be worn.  Socks are optional.  Hair that is shoulder length or longer should be worn up and away from the face.

What classes are offered?

Bungee Fitness – 14 years and Above
Test the limits of the bungee, get a feel for the equipment, and learn how your body moves attached to the bungee.  As you start to build up a tolerance for the harness and become familiar with the equipment and how your body moves, class is faster paced, as we move through the fitness and flying portions of the class.  Moves are joined together into fitness flows.  Instruction is modified for those in attendance.

Bungee Fitness – 13 years and Under
Test the limits of the bungee, get a feel for the equipment, and learn how your body moves attached to the bungee.  As you start to build up a tolerance for the harness and become familiar with the equipment and how your body moves, class is faster paced, as we move through the fitness and flying portions of the class.  Moves are joined together into fitness flows and fun games.  Instruction is modified for those in attendance.

Limitations

Bungee fitness will accommodate 90 pounds up to 225 pounds. Refer to waiver for additional information.

Lyra Hoop

What is a Lyra Hoop?

The lyra is a round, steel hoop that is suspended from the ceiling.  The poses and tricks that are performed below the hoop, within the hoop, and above the hoop provide a full body workout.  Some of the benefits include increased strength, balance, flexibility, and coordination.

What classes are offered?

Intro
(Approximately 4-8 weeks on a consistent basis)

Level 1 & Level 1+ & Level 2

Limitations

Lyra Hoop accommodates up to 250 pounds.  Refer to waiver for additional information.

Growing up Alicia was not much for organized fitness.  She did not participate in any organized sports as a youth, and it wasn’t until reaching her 30’s that she saw the importance of exercise to maintain a healthy lifestyle.  One year she received a gift certificate for Christmas to attend an aerial yoga class.  It took one class for her to realize that this needed to be a part of her fitness routine.  While she enjoys a variety of different types of fitness, Aerial remains the constant. She has been practicing as a student at Aerial Fun and Fitness for the last 4 years, and her growing interest has led her to get certified as an aerial fitness instructor and join Uplift Aerial Arts.
